Wednesday 12th December 2012
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, met The King of Jordan, His Majesty Abdullah II, today at Lambeth Palace during the King’s visit to the United Kingdom.Archbishop Rowan and King Abdullah took the opportunity to reflect on the current tensions in the Middle East and the needs of the historic Christian and Muslim religious communities in the region. Recognising the traditional Hashemite responsibility for the Christian and Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem and the Occupied Territories, and also the needs of international pilgrims from both communities, the Archbishop thanked the King for his own and his father’s exemplary role, and encouraged His Majesty to continue what is felt as a vital service to the common good of both religious communities locally and internationally.
