Archbishop's visit to Christ's Hospital, Horsham

The Archbishop of Canterbury visited the school of Christ's Hospital in Horsham, where he preached at a Chapel Service for the whole school, took part in a classroom debate, and had lunch with staff and pupils.In his address, the Archbishop, recently back from Africa, talked about his experiences which he linked to the School's theme for the term "Being human". The Archbishop quoted an African saying, much used by Desmond Tutu, "I am because you are" to develop the theme that every individual grows in association with, and service of, others.
After the service, the Archbishop joined Sixth Formers in class, as they debated modern philosophical and ethical issues. The visit ended with a buffet lunch in the company of 70 pupils and staff.
Christ's Hospital dates back to 1552 when it was founded using funds raised by the City of London, the Church, businesses and donations from Londoners to provide food, clothing lodging and learning "for fatherless children and other poor men's children". The school still upholds the principle of providing a boarding environment for pupils who come from disadvantaged and diverse family and cultural backgrounds, and it maintains a continuing commitment to the ideals of Christian service and civic responsibility.
