Archbishop's statement on devastating floods in Pakistan

Wednesday 28th September 2011

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has made the following statement regarding the recent devastating floods in Pakistan:

"It is profoundly shocking to see the suffering caused by the return of devastating floods in Pakistan. It is also troubling to note the speed with which this crisis faded from the world's news headlines. Communities which had not yet recovered from last year's crisis are rendered even more vulnerable by the latest flooding. About eight million people are estimated to have been affected: lives lost, homes destroyed, crops ruined, reversing the steps taken by communinities to rebuild homes and livelihoods following last year's floods.

At a time when the global community is facing severe financial and environmental shocks, it is crucial that we do not lose sight of those people suffering the most brutal consequences - in the Horn of Africa, and now also in Pakistan. Expressions of solidarity and sustained commitment, through prayer and generous giving, will help restore lives and hope."
