Archbishop meets with Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr Ali Gomaa

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, met today with the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr Ali Gomaa, the Bishop of Egypt and the Middle East the Rt Revd Mouneer Hanna Anis, and the Ammbassador of Egypt His Excellency Mr Hatem Seif El Nasr, at Lambeth Palace.During a private meeting they discussed a number of issues currently facing Egypt including inter faith relations. The Archbishop congratulated the Grand Mufti on being awarded an honorary doctorate by Liverpool Hope University on 19th July 2011.
Dr Williams also said that he appreciated the way in which Dr Gomaa has shown solidarity with Christians in Egypt and in other parts of the world particularly when they face difficult situations.
There was a great awareness of the significant role that the Diocese of Egypt and the Middle East under the leadership of Bishop Mouneer is playing to support inter religious harmony in the region. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment for working together, in particular in the encouragement of young people to build hope for a just and peaceful society in which all communities can flourish.
