Archbishop arrives in Kenya

Saturday 18th June 2011

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, arrived in Nairobi on Saturday 18th June at the start of a week-long visit to Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

After warm greetings from the delegation that had gathered to greet the Archbishop at Nairobi Airport, which included Archbishop Eluid Wabukala, Bishop Timothy Ranji and Bishop Joel Waweru, Dr Williams was taken for a tour of the Provincial offices where he met the senior staff and signed the visitors’ book.

Archbishop Eluid gave a warm welcome to Archbishop Rowan, saying:

“Your Grace, I reiterate our welcome and openness in sharing the apostolic faith within the Anglican Communion. This, I reckon, is the greatest opportunity that we share within the body of Christ: witnessing the Good News of Salvation.”

The Archbishop of Kenya went on to outline the theme that the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) had earlier this year decided to focus on for the coming decade: Together for Christ. With this in mind the ACK is calling on the nation to implement the new National Constitution and for politicians to work towards ensuring an equitable distribution of resources and the strengthening of institutions that will ensure good governance - making a stand on the issue of corruption in public life. The Church also plans to focus on education and youth, building peace and reconciliation programmes for young people in the region.

After lunch by Lake Nakuru, and a chance to see some of the local wildlife, Dr Williams concluded his day with a tree planting ceremony at a Christian prayer centre, Jehovah Shamma, which was recently constructed to provide a space for those seeking a quiet retreat, and also providing a centre for Christian conferences.
