Archbishop Rowan Williams' tribute to Lord Sheppard
Monday 7th March 2005
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has paid tribute to Lord Sheppard of Liverpool, the former Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, who died on Saturday."Without any doubt, David Sheppard was one of the greatest figures of the twentieth-century Church of England. Both locally and nationally, he was a brave and consistent spokesman for the disadvantaged, and a probing analyst of the patterns of injustice that prevail in our society. As a witness to the possibilities of Christian co-operation across ancient divisions, he made a unique contribution to practical ecumenism.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Grace and the family who shared him so generously with the rest of us."
