Archbishop - brief meeting with Pope

Monday 25th April 2005

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has had a brief meeting with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

The two church leaders met during an audience given by the Pope for representatives of the Christian denominations and other faiths.

Dr Williams and Pope Benedict, who had not met before, exchanged greetings in German before Dr Williams presented a pectoral cross to mark the start of the new pontificate (details below).

At the end of the brief exchange, they promised to pray for each other.

Notes to Editors:

The pectoral cross, which was specially commissioned, consists of a silver cross set with amethysts with a smaller gold Canterbury cross at its centre.
