Appointment - Vicar-General of the Province of Canterbury

Monday 17th October 2005

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has appointed Chancellor Timothy Briden as Vicar-General of the Province of Canterbury, in succession to the Rt Worshipful Sheila Cameron QC, who relinquished the position at the beginning of this month.

Dr Cameron will continue to hold office as Dean of Court of the Arches and Auditor of the Chancery Court of York.

The Vicar-General customarily presides over Confirmations of Election of diocesan bishops in the Southern Province, and from 1 January, will have a particular role in the operation of the new Clergy Discipline Measure. He is ex-officio a member of the General Synod.

Chancellor Briden is Chancellor of the dioceses of Bath and Wells, and Truro, and is known to many through his editorship of Macmorran's Handbook for Churchwardens and PCC Members, and of Moore's Introduction to English Canon Law. He is a member of the Legal Advisory Commission of the Church of England.
