Speaking during a courtesy call on the country's president, HE Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, Dr Williams said that Tanzania had been for him a symbol of hope during his younger days. 'Tanzania stood and stands for what can be achieved through democratic development,' he told the President.

The two discussed inter Faith relations, the challenges of providing enhanced education, cooperation between Church and government in Tanzania and other developments in the region.

Dr Williams was accompanied by the Archbishop of Tanzania, the Most Revd Donald Mtetemela, the Bishop of Lahore and Primate of Pakistan, the Rt Revd Alexander John Malik and the Bishop of Dar Es Salaam, the Rt Revd Valentino Kirkiry.

At the end of the 30 minute meeting at the State House in Dar Es Salaam, Dr Williams presented the President with a silver salver inscribed with the Compass Rose, the symbol of the Anglican Communion.
