Wednesday 1st July 2009

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, yesterday hosted a seminar at Lambeth Palace entitled "Inspiration, Truth and the Search for Understanding", with the aim of examining how faith and science can contribute to a richer knowledge and a deeper understanding of the nature of truth. The Seminar was chaired by Madeleine Bunting from the Guardian.

Below are the panelists and the titles of their initial reflections, which provided a starting point to the conversation:

The Rt Hon & Most Revd Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury

  • Kinds of Knowing

Simon Conway-Morris, Professor of Evolutionary Palaeobiology, University of Cambridge

  • A mutual crisis of confidence? Why science and faith have far more in common than is typically realised and both are now suffering a major failure of nerve

  • Saving the Natural - Why divorcing nature from religion threatens our ability to understand nature itself

Celia Deane-Drummond, Professor and Director, Centre for Religion and the Biosciences, University of Chester
