Archbishop of Canterbury visits Taizé

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, began a three day visit to the community of Taizé today.The Archbishop and his family will stay at Taizé as guests of brother Alois and the community of brothers at Taizé. During his stay the Archbishop will speak to the five thousand pilgrims, mostly young adults, who are currently spending a week or longer at Taizé.
He will also spend time with the community and with the various communities of religious sisters attached to or living close to Taizé. On Friday (7th August) Dr Williams will spend time with the young volunteers who spend a longer time at Taizé and help to welcome and host the pilgrims, and also with young pilgrims from the UK.

Taizé is an ecumenical community of brothers living a monastic life dedicated to service of the whole church, and especially the young and the poor. Founded by Brother Roger, who was succeeded as leader of the community by Brother Alois, Taizé welcomes tens of thousands of pilgrims, mostly in their teens, twenties and thirties, every year. This week, during which the church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration, is the busiest week of the year at Taizé.
